It was purchased by a family of shipowners from Nantes, with the name of Walsh. This old Irish family had gone into exile in France to demonstrate its enduring loyalty to the dethroned Stuarts.
The Walshes remodelled the interior design of the château, created a park in the English style, built the two pavilions and the monumental gate of honour which carries their coat of arms, in the form of a swan pierced by an arrow.
