 The Orangery of Serrant

From 2017 onwards, the team of Serrant will be at your disposal in order to offer you a variety of space and rooms for your receptions or wedding celebrations in a magnificent setting.

The Orangery of the Chateau, a few historical facts ...

The more ancient parts of the Orangery date probably back to the 16th century when it was established as a garrison building during the wars of religion.

Later, during the 17th century, William de Bautru converts this building into an Orangery.

The architectural design of the current Orangery dates back to the year 1771 when it was converted into its present shape by the Walsh family. It is a perfect example of the 18th century architecture: A large frontage punctuated by classic pediment windows. Thanks to this frontage and according to the relevant archives, the building was considered at the time “ one of the most beautiful orangeries in France”.

The grounds around the building were made up of a remarkable French landscape garden, which has vanished since.

What is precisely an Orangery?

A closed building composed of wide windows which will allow orange trees and other vegetable varieties to be sheltered from the cold.

In France, it was during the reign of Louis XIV that the first Orangery was built. Indeed, the most famous Orangery is within the grounds of the Chateau of Versailles.

During World War II, Serrant was occupied by the German Army. Some buildings, including the Orangery, were converted into an office or living space or even a warehouse.

The Orangery was listed “Monument Historique” in 1948.

As of 2017 onwards, the Prince and Princess de Merode, current owners of Serrant, have put new life into the Orangery, providing it with a new scope as an ideal function hall with the perfect capacity to accommodate all your receptions.
